Network processors are integrated circuit devices that combine the speed of an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) with a CPU to provide a high performance networking solution, ASIC technology is widely used to classify, filter and forward IP communications. The problem with ASICs, however, is that they are hardwired to have a particular set of functions. If the set of functions changes or is upgraded, the ASIC must be replaced. When new standards emerge (MPLS and Diff-Serv are examples of recent standards developments), ASICs must be replaced, while network processors can provide hardware-level processing performance through a flexible software architecture, and NP (Network Processor) based network devices offer high performance and flexibility.

The network processor is a high-performance, programmable I/O device. It is specifically used for various tasks in the field of communication, such as packet processing, protocol analysis, route finding, aggregation of sound/data, firewalling, QoS, etc. Programmability is the criterion that distinguishes network processors from ASICs. In contrast to creating a one-off ASIC, a network processor allows the supplier creating the network device to write code for the communication processor to reduce time to market. By allowing vendors to add new features to the device, this strategy also extends the life of the device.
