The principle of the two-wire transmitter is that it uses a 4 to 20mA signal to supply itself with electrical power. If the transmitter draws more than 4mA, it will not be possible to output the lower 4mA value. This is one of the fundamental principles of the two-wire transmitter design. In terms of overall structure, the two-wire transmitter consists of three main components: the sensor, the conditioning circuit and the two-wire V/I converter. The sensor converts physical quantities such as temperature and pressure into electrical parameters, while the conditioning circuit amplifies, conditions and converts the weak or non-linear electrical signal output from the sensor into a linear voltage output. The two-wire V/I converter circuit controls the overall power consumption current based on the output of the signal conditioning circuit; at the same time the voltage is obtained from the loop and regulated for use by the conditioning circuit and the sensor. With the exception of the V/I converter circuit, each part of the circuit has its own current draw. The core design idea of the two-wire transmitter is to include all currents in the feedback loop of the V/I converter. As shown in the diagram, the sampling resistor Rs is connected in series at the low end of the circuit and all current will flow through Rs back to the negative side of the supply. The feedback signal taken from Rs contains all the power consumed by the circuit. In a two-wire transmitter, the total power consumption of all the circuits must not be greater than 3.5mA, making the low power consumption of the circuit a major design challenge.

The 990 vibration sensor is primarily used by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of centrifugal air compressors or small pumps, motors or fans who prefer to provide a simple 4 to 20 mA proportional vibration signal as an input to their mechanical control systems. The transmitter is a 2-wire loop powered device that accepts the input of a 3300 NSV* close fitting probe and its matching extension cable (available in 5 m and 7 m system length options). The transmitter conditions the signal to the appropriate peak-to-peak amplitude engineering units and provides this value as a proportional 4 to 20 mA industry standard signal to the control system where the mechanical protection alarm logic occurs.
Transmitters are developed from transducers, where a sensor is capable of outputting a standard signal. A standard signal is a signal where the form and quantity range of the physical quantity conforms to international standards. Since DC signals have the advantages of not being affected by inductance, capacitance and the nature of the load in the line and not having phase shift problems, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has identified current signals 4mA to 20mA (DC) and voltage signals 1V to 5V (DC) as the unified standard for analogue signals in process control systems.
