When a single-mode fibre conducts an optical signal  the energy of the light is not entirely concentrated in the core.
A small amount is transmitted through the cladding close to the core  which means that  the mode field of the light transmitted in one fiber can enter the other if the two fibers are close enough.
The mode field of the light transmitted in one fiber can enter the other fiber if the cores of the two fibers are close enough 
The optical signal is redistributed between the two fibres
