DSAI130 Analogue input modules

The analogue input is the traditional input. The digital input is a PCM digital signal, i.e. a binary digital signal of 0,1, which is converted into an analogue signal through digital-to-analogue conversion and amplified by the preamplifier into the power amplifier, which is still analogue.

These modules have built-in signal conditioning for direct connection to high voltage and milliamp signals, as well as low voltage signals, thermocouples, RTDs and bridging circuits (e.g. strain gauges). All modules have power distribution bridging and can easily be used with two-wire current loop sensors. All modules have 2300Vrms transient overvoltage protection between the input channels and the backplane. To make installation and setup easier, CompactFieldPoint analogue input modules are hot-swappable (plug and play) and can be automatically detected and recognised by the configuration software. The auto-calibration feature allows you to read and write to the modules in engineering units without having to convert the levels to binary, simplifying software development. All modules are supplied with a NIST calibration certificate to ensure accurate and reliable analogue measurements.

An analogue quantity is the counterpart of a digital quantity. The so-called ‘analogue’ quantity is the commonly seen, untransformed, continuously varying quantity; a digital quantity is an intermittent quantity, generally (but not exclusively) transformed, and can be expressed in numbers. For example, if a digital multimeter is used to measure a voltage or current signal, it is obvious that the quantity is continuously changing, so it is an analogue quantity. When it reaches the multimeter, after conversion (called A/D conversion), it becomes a quantity that can be processed by a digital computer, which is then called a digital quantity. Another example: a traditional watch, where the hands move continuously, shows the time as an analogue quantity, whereas a quartz or electronic watch shows the time as a digital quantity. So, it can be said that an analogue input is the input of a continuous signal.
