ABB TENSOMETER Millmate strip tension measurement – principle of pressure head measurement
The piezomagnetic sensor works on the principle that the permeability of a magnetic material changes under the influence of a mechanical force. The sensor is made from a single piece of stainless steel with four holes punched in the stainless steel body. Through these four holes two sets of coils are wound at an angle to each other. When an alternating current is applied to the primary coil, a magnetic field is generated in the primary coil. Since the primary and secondary coils are at an angle to each other, no magnetic field is generated in the secondary coil as long as there is no load on the sensor. When a mechanical force is applied in the measuring direction of the sensor, the direction of propagation of the magnetic field in the primary coil changes and the secondary coil is incorporated into the magnetic field. As a result of the change in the magnetic field in the secondary coil, an induced potential is generated in this coil. The control unit converts this induced potential into a DC voltage signal proportional to the force being measured.
