Classification

There are many different types of PC bus-based boards, and they can be classified in a variety of ways.

According to the different signals processed by the boards, they can be divided into analogue input boards (A/D cards), analogue output boards (D/A cards), switch input boards, switch output boards, pulse input boards and multifunctional boards. The multifunctional boards can integrate several functions, e.g. the digital input/output board integrates analogue and digital input/output on the same card. Depending on the bus, they can be divided into PXI/CPCI boards and PCI boards.

Functionality

The functions of a typical data acquisition card are analogue input, analogue output, digital I/O, counter/timer etc. These functions are implemented by the respective circuits.

Analogue input is the most basic function of acquisition. The performance and parameters of the A/D directly affect the quality of the analogue input, and a suitable A/D should be selected according to the actual accuracy required.

The analogue output usually provides the excitation for the acquisition system. The output signal is influenced by the build-up time, conversion rate and resolution of the digital-to-analogue converter (D/A). The build-up time and conversion rate determine how quickly the output signal amplitude changes. A D/A with a short build-up time and a high conversion rate can provide a signal at a higher frequency. If the output signal of a D/A is used to drive a heater, there is no need to use a very fast D/A because the heater itself cannot track voltage changes very quickly. Therefore, the parameter specifications of the D/A should be selected according to the actual need.
